100 Days with 100 Dogs: Day 49 - Meet Shyla

Just one day until the halfway mark in our 100 Days with 100 Dogs series and it coincides with National Puppy Mill Survivor Day. The name gives it away as a US 'holiday', but it is far from a US only issue. When the price of puppies skyrocketed during lockdown we saw more increased numbers of puppy farms cashing in. It's estimated that around a quarter of puppies bought during this period originated from puppy farms and so risking health and behavioural issues later in life on top of the atrocious conditions often found. And as we've seen (along with other rescues all over the country) many of these puppies end up in rescue, or worse.

Meet Shyla

This is the lovely Shyla and she's 4 years old with a gorgeous black and tan short coat. She is great with people but can become excited and jump, so we recommend a household without young children.

Shyla is reactive to other dogs so she requires a pet-free home. She's currently located in Stamford, Lincolnshire.

If you can provide the home Shyla is searching for then please contact us via the form here

Dickie's Diary - A Trip to the Vets

Hello everypawdy. Dickie Hill here and I've been on another adventure.  Mum took me somewhere called "the vet".  I've been there before so I was quite excited about going. We always have a lovely time when we are there.  Everypawdy makes a fuss of me and I receive lots of treats.

I can also look around and I practice standing on a big platform thingy. That's easy peasy because we have platform thingys in the garden. This is a magic one though because it tells Mum if I've been eating too many treats.  I think it said that this time so I was a bit worried but thankfully I still enjoyed a lickie mat while waiting even though the magic platform told Mum lies.

Mum says that sometimes when I go to "the vet" they may have to do things to me but I know they are all kind to me so won't hurt me. She says all pups should visit the vet and make friends, not just when they need something. I saw some dogs there that were really frightened but I don't know why. Maybe they thought the magic platform thingy would say they were fat too.

All the best pupstars - Dickie Hill signing off for now! 🐾🐾🐾

Don't I look great in these photos? Does your German Shepherd also look good in your photos? Then get those photos submitted now for the 2023 GSD Welfare Fund Calendar before time runs out!

100 Days with 100 Dogs: Day 48 - Meet Bruno

The next day in our 100 Days with 100 Dogs feature not only brings a new dog eager for their forever home, but also closer to the 2023 Calendar Competition deadline. There are only a few days left, so if you'd like to show your German Shepherd off in next year's calendar then you need to get cracking!

https://gsdwelfare.blogspot.com/2022/09/2023-calendar-comp.html

Meet Bruno

This lovely boy is Bruno and he's 7 or 8 years old. He is a black and tan male German Shepherd. He is described as a real gentleman and he's also great with people. He would be fine with older children.

A dog-free house is probably best, but he could live with a calm female. He's not been tested with cats.

Bruno is located in Stamford, South Lincolnshire.

If you can offer Bruno a peaceful and caring home then please contact us via the adoption query form here - http://www.gsdwelfarefund.co.uk/adopting-a-german-shepherd/

100 Days with 100 Dogs: Day 47 - Meet Ross

We're almost halfway through the 100 Days with 100 Dogs series and we meet  another young boy who's sadly experienced a terrible start to life, But with your amazing support we'll find

Meet Ross

The lovely Ross is a 1 year old male, and entire German Shepherd. He was rescued from dreadful conditions with several other dogs.  Because of his beginning, he can be shy and nervous until he gets to know you.

Although Ross lived with other dogs he is reactive towards dogs but this is probably fear. Even so, he would be better in a quiet pet free home. He'd better suit a household without young children.

He's currently located in Stamford, South Lincolnshire.

Please Follow, Like, and Share to get this to as many people as possible so we can find Ross a home he can be loved and grow in. If you can offer him his forever home then please contact us via the form here

100 Days with 100: Day 46: Ace is Ace

For the 46th day of our 100 Days with 100 Dogs series we meet one of our very special resident dogs. Sadly not all of the dogs that come to us are suitable for rehoming, and this can be for many reasons. They might have complicated health conditions, or intractable behavioural issues or on their last strike with a Police order (one more violation and they are executed). If the dog is still capable of enjoying life then we don't put them to sleep, but instead them to live their lives in peace. Even dogs so traumatised they can't live in a normal home deserve a life worth living.

Ace is Ace

Ace came into our care when he was 9 months old having already lived in four different homes. Sadly, something had happened in his original home before he was 7 months old that had obviously terrified him. We believe an electric collar was used on him.

He was rescued but at each home, it didn't work out for him so he was moved on. In the fourth household he lunged at a member of the family so they brought him into Welfare.

When he came it was difficult to get near him. He wasn't vicious, he was terrified. We did a lot of rehabilitation work with him and he came on in leaps and bounds but he still reacted to young men (his original home where the trauma had been caused) so it would be difficult to re-home him. On top of all this, the poor boy is now almost blind. The chances of him finding a suitable home were extremely, so we took the decision to keep him in our care.

Ace is one of 30 dogs in our lifelong care, you can help provide for their upkeep here: http://www.gsdwelfarefund.co.uk/product/sponsor-a-dog/

100 Days with 100 Dogs: Day 45 - Bella and Pups Update

For the 45th day in the 100 Days with 100 Dogs series, we have some good news to report regarding Bella and her five pups. The pups have now been named: Hector, Reggie, Otto, Casper and Mouse. Everyone continues to settle in well and fur is starting to grow back :-)

Not only that, Reggie and Casper have already departed for their new homes and we wish them and their new pawrents all the best. Otto has also found his furever home and leaves us in October. A big thank you to their adopters and we hope that we'll find homes for the rest as soon as possible.

Their appeal has now raised just over £2,000 and we're heading for the halfway mark. A heartfelt thanks to everyone who's contributed so far, you're support is much appreciated. If you haven't yet then please do so and it doesn't matter how small the donation is,  as one of the supermarkets keeps insisting - every little helps!

100 Days with 100 Dogs: Day 44 - A Double Bill of Tom & Jerry

We've reached Day 44 and are almost halfway through our 100 Days with 100 Dogs series, although we now have 117 dogs in our care and 30 of those are lifelong residents. Rescue is in crisis for everyone and we're no exception (in fact we're regularly receiving calls to take on because other rescues don't have space), and as with Bella and her pups taking them on put us over capacity, but again with these two, we couldn't abandon these young dogs to their fate.

A Double Bill of Tom & Jerry

Tom
Tom and Jerry are male GSD puppies who we think are about 5 months old. They were handed in as strays, underweight and with patches of fur missing.   They've obviously been together for the entirety of their short lives.

They share a strong bond and we've started separating them to prepare them. Tom is the more affectionate of the pair and is becoming very attached to his human carer.  We feel he will have a strong bond with his adopter.  However,  this could cause a problem and present itself as over-attachment. He loves a fuss and cuddles.

They've missed the most important time for socialising but have shown no concerns when going out. We feel that separating these boys is in their best interest for their future. Tom is at the "mouthing" stage and so bad it's not appropriate to have him around very young children.

Jerry

Tom and Jerry will need homes where their adopters are there most of the time. They can be very vocal at times, but house training is going great. They're a joy to be around.

They're currently located in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire.

If you can offer Tom or Jerry a home for them to develop and be loved in then please get in touch - https://www.gsdwelfarefund.co.uk/adopting-a-german-shepherd/

Tia's Pupdates - Nose Joints?

Hello everypawdy. Tia here with a pupdate. I just wanted to share with you that I am feeling rather miffed at the moment. I tried talking to the hooman but she just said my nose is out of joint. Then she added that my nose is so big that she should have noticed it was out of joint.

How rude! Personally, I think my nose suits me just right. I am sure you have all heard that the hooman brought home two puppies that needed help. I was fine with this and I have to say they are cute. However, what I am miffed about is that when she wanted to socialise them she chose Ada to play with them.

I mean, if that isn't favouritism then I don't know what is. I have so much more experience than Ada and I could have taught them so much. But no.  The hooman said she didn't want them learning to bite bottoms.

She did try to win back my affection by trying to play games with me but then played with the ball by myself and pretended I wasn't interested. It's a good job I have my Rodney. He doesn't make fun of my nose.

Must go now as I can smell chimken. She's trying to bribe me now. Love Tia 🀍🀍

100 Days with 100 Dogs: Day 43 - Meet Loki

Day 42 on our journey through 100 Days with 100 Dogs brings with it some excellent news - we've passed the £2,000 mark with Bella and her pups appeal. A massive thank you to everyone who has donated so far - we're almost halfway there! If you're able to contribute then please do so here - https://www.gofundme.com/manage/urgent-appeal-for-bella-and-her-five-pups All donations are gratefully received.

We also meet another lovely lad looking for his forever home...

Meet Loki

Loki is very a handsome long haired male German Shepherd dog. He is a joy to be around and loves people - as you can tell from his cheeky smile.

Unfortunately, he is quite reactive to other dogs so needs to be the only pet in the household. Loki hasn't been tested with cats.

He's currently located in Stamford,  South Lincolnshire.

Please share this post as widely as possible so we can find the right home for him - if you think that home could be yours then contact us through the adoption query form here - http://www.gsdwelfarefund.co.uk/adopting-a-german-shepherd/

100 Days with 100 Dogs: Day 42 - Meet Karma

Today in our Friends of GSD Welfare Facebook group our subscribers participated in an informative live session with Rachel Leather, an expert in dog trauma.  Trauma is a consistent issue we encounter with our rescues, particularly of late - find out more about being a Friends of GSD Welfare subscriber at the end of this post. First, let's meet another of our dogs looking for a loving home.

Meet Karma

This pretty lady is Karma. She is 7 -8 years old. She is fantastic with humans but is reactive to other dogs. Because of this, we will be looking for a home where she is the only pet.

She hasn't lived with children, but considering her early experiences we recommend there are no young children (under 10) in the house.

We are told that she loves to sit and watch football on the TV with her hooman - we don't know which team she supports though!

Karma currently lives in Stamford, South Lincolnshire.

If you can offer Karma her forever home then please get in touch with us via the adoption query form - http://www.gsdwelfarefund.co.uk/adopting-a-german-shepherd/

You can become a Friend of GSD Welfare for as little as £3 per month, and as well supporting our mission to save vulnerable German Shepherds you'll gain access to some incredible exclusive content. Find out more here - https://gsdwelfare.blogspot.com/p/become-friend-of-gsd-welfare.html

Dickie's Diary - Leaving Cues

Hello fellow pup-stars - Dickie Hill back again. I'm sure you've heard about how busy things are around here with all sorts of comings and goings. I don't think I've ever seen mum rushing around so much. Despite all that practice she's still not as quick as me, although I am super quick, and I don't think any hooman could ever be as fast as me.

No matter how busy she is - there's always some learning to do. Here she's playing... Well let's say that teaching is the truth of it - I'm almost a big dog now so I know what's really going on, but as there's usually tasty treats involved I don't mind. They're also fun (most of the time) so it's like playing if you think about it. See I'm cleverer, as well as bigger!

Anyway the game today is leaving queues which seems silly because I know all about queues. You sit and wait. Boring really, unless the queue is somewhere cool with exciting smells and hoomans to watch.

Apparently it's cues, not queues. Hoomans can be silly - why say the same thing if they mean something different. It's a strange game this one, and I've discovered that mum can do magic! Look how the chicken disappears and then re-appears as if by magic. She might not be as swift as me, but she's very clever. But so am I! Anyway, I best get focused, I only get the chimkin if I figure out what she wants. Bye for now and see all of you pup-stars again soon 🐾🐾🐾

And for those of you not as smart as me, mum says that this is what she's doing:

"Teaching Dickie to “leave it”. There is no point giving him the cue if he doesn’t understand what it means. So we teach him the behaviour and then tell him what he's doing. There's no shouting, no rush and definitely no fuss. He makes the choice. If he “leaves it” then he receives the treat. If he tries to take it or paw for it the chicken becomes unavailable. Once he learns the behaviour, as he backs off we will add the cue “leave it” then gradually start giving the cue sooner in the exercise, and ultimately this will also help with impulse control."

Mum also says that some of the new dogs that came in need our help. I will save them each a nice treat. Maybe... You hoomans can help here if you're able to!

100 Days with 100 Dogs: Day 42 - Meet Diesel

Day 41 of our 100 Days with 100 Dogs coincides with the American Kennel Club's 'Responsible Dog Ownership Day' and while we're obviously not American it does serve as a reminder for us. Dealing with rescues and amidst an ongoing rescue crisis in this country we should remember that the vast majority of dog owners are responsible and provide the proper care for their beloved dogs. It's also the special people amongst who step forward to adopt, or help in whatever they are able to. And we thank each and every one of you from the bottom of our hearts.

Meet Diesel

This handsome boy is Diesel. He's only 11 months old and looking for a forever home where he can grow.

Diesel loves people but is reactive to other dogs. Because of this we will be looking for a pet free home for him. He's not lived with children, but we believe he would be fine with older children. Diesel isn't neutered yet because if his age.

He's currently located in Stamford, Lincolnshire.

If you'd like to offer Diesel (or any of our listed dogs) a home then please get in touch via the form on this page https://www.gsdwelfarefund.co.uk/adopting-a-german-shepherd/

We're also in the final two weeks for our 2023 Calendar submissions - if you have any awesome photos of your German Shepherd then you can find out more here https://gsdwelfare.blogspot.com/2022/09/2023-calendar-comp.html

Only Two Weeks To Enter Your Calendar Photos!

Hi everyone - there's only two weeks left to enter your photos for our 2023 calendar, so please get those entries in quickly!

IMPORTANT UPDATE

Please note that the themes are intended as a guide to encourage a variety of fun images, we have no intention of them getting in the way of attracting great photos for the calendar. For example, a photo that relates to the theme anecdotally rather than as an explicit visual theme is fine - although please include the anecdote if that is the case.

To make sure that we also get your best and favourite photos we're adding a Wildcard option that isn't restricted by theme, so can be your favourite photo of your GSD. We'll use these as a back-up for any of the months if we judge a wildcard photo to be stronger than any of the theme submissions, or that theme doesn't receive any valid submissions.

All submitted photos (themed or otherwise) will be considered for the cover photo selection.

Full details for submissions can be found here

Please like and share this post as widely as possible so we can get some awesome GSD photos for next year's calendar!

100 Days with 100 Dogs: Day 41 - Bella & Pups Appeal Update

First, we'd like to start this update with a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has contributed to Bella and her Five Pups Appeal. Everyone's response has been simply awe-inspiring - we're almost a third of the way to our target already!

And of course, we want to keep you all up to date with how Bella and her pups are doing since we rescued them. Sadly clean up proved more difficult than hoped, so we have to shave the fur off completely for some of them. Other than that We're happy to report that they're responding as well as you all are! As you can see in the video they've enjoyed some running around in open space. They're also eating well, which again is not unexpected. Overall they're doing well, and we look forward to sharing their progress over the coming weeks.

Please Like and Share this post wherever you can, if we can attract more supporters then we'll hit that target that much quicker,

100 Days with 100 Dogs: Day 40 - Meet Sandy

The 40th day of our 100 Days with 100 Dogs feature is here and as we meet another lovely dog eager to join her new family, we'd also like to reflect and thank all of you who have come forward to enquire about adopting our dogs.

And we hope that we can attract more, and give all of the dogs suitable for rehoming a chance at a new and better life. It might not be you; many dogs have experienced trauma that shapes their needs, and not everyone is in a position to take one on. But it might be someone you know, who'd never have known if you hadn't shared that particular post...

Meet Sandy

This lovely lady is Sandy, a 6 year old female German Shepherd. She's great with people - including children. She gets on fine with male dogs, but not with female ones.

It should also be a cat free household.

Sandy is currently located in Clacton, Essex.

If Sandy would fit in with your household then let us know via the form on our adoption page here

https://www.gsdwelfarefund.co.uk/adopting-a-german-shepherd/

My young nephew is undertaking an endurance challenge to raise money for the dogs in our care - let's show him how we can respond and back his efforts and see what we achieve together. Any donation - no matter how small will put a grin on his face :-)

And just look at that grin!

100 Days with 100 Dogs: Day 39 - Meet Smudge

It's been an eventful and for many, emotional past few days with the Queen passing, remembering 9/11, and for me personally a friend passing. We offer our condolences to everyone grieving or remembering loved ones. So we paused the 100 Days with 100 Dogs to allow that breathing space, but we must continue as the best future for these dogs is to find them loving households, that match their individual needs.

Meet Smudge

This cheerful looking lady is Smudge, and she is a 9 year old female German Shepherd.

Smudge is generally good with people and also does well with other dogs. Unfortunately, she doesn't do as well with children, and so would need a home without anyone under 16 years of age. She also cannot be in a house with cats.

Smudge is currently located in Clacton, Essex.

If you can offer Smudge the home she needs then please contact us via the form provided here

https://www.gsdwelfarefund.co.uk/adopting-a-german-shepherd/

We would also like to thank everyone who has generously donated to the urgent appeal for Bella and her pups. Despite already stretched beyond capacity, we couldn't leave them in those circumstances. However, we do need your help so we can give them a chance of finding their furever home.

Puppy Care Topic - First Walks

This Puppy Care article regarding their first walks is extracted from a handout provided to the adopters of Lexi's puppies. It was written by Lisa Hird, our resident behavioral expert who also runs the Dog Behaviour Clinic (https://www.dogbehaviourclinic.co.uk/), and she is available to support the needs of you and your dog.

Puppy Care Topic – First Walks

FIRST WALKS - SOCIALISING IN THE PARK – OR JUST A BIT OF A NIGHTMARE?

What the puppy sees:

The park is HUGE compared to the safety of my house and garden. It smells AMAZING! There are so many smells to sniff and so many things to see, and then there is that ball to play with, and look at all those dogs, and all those people who keep coming over to see me, and pat me on the head, and play with me, and this is just SO EXCITING

Or what the puppy might see:

The park is HUGE compared to my garden and house. Everything is moving so fast. Everything smells strange. There are too many people about and they feel scary. There are too many dogs around and they are getting way too close, and even though I normally love playing with my ball, I cannot even look at it right now.

There are very few puppies who do not feel like either one of these two. And, even though the first one may seem as if she is dealing with things ok, neither of them is in a good state of mind where they can learn what they need to about being in the park.

KEEP IT CALM

Puppies need to be calm to be well socialised. Over-excited puppies quickly become tired and overwhelmed. Scared puppies are already overwhelmed. The only way that a puppy can learn anything that she needs to about her new world is if she is calm:

A CALM puppy can CONCENTRATE and CONNECT with her handler, in order to make the right CHOICES and to build CONFIDENCE through her new experiences.

THE SOCIALISING RULE

A puppy’s first experience of something new needs to Feel Good.

Then the next 10 experiences of that same new thing need to Feel Good

Only then is it alright for an experience of that new thing to just Feel Ok

You need AT LEAST 20 good experiences of something before one of those experiences can Feel Bad, otherwise, your puppy may develop fear issues.

Even a puppy who has been brought up in a litter with many brothers and sisters can become fearful of other dogs. In fact, puppies living with dogs of all ages can become fearful of other dogs if new introductions are not managed carefully in the first 8 weeks of living with you.

During this period, she needs to be introduced to as many calm, well-mannered dogs as possible, preferably dogs who are older than she is. Ideally, she needs to meet at least 10 CALM dogs before she meets another puppy. Those calm, well-mannered dogs will help her Feel Good about dogs.

After she has met 10 calm dogs, then it is ok for her to play with another puppy, in a carefully managed, brief period together. This will be her one Feel Ok experience of another dog, and it will need to be balanced with interacting with her 10 calm and well-mannered friends so that she does not associate dogs with feeling excited and playing with them all the time.

We all want our dogs to have other dog friends and feel comfortable with them, but we also want our dogs to walk calmly past other dogs in the street. If a puppy gets to play too frequently with other puppies, or with over-excitable dogs in these early 8 weeks, she will associate all other dogs with feeling excited, which soon turns to barking at other dogs in the street. Being around other calm dogs will help her to stay calm.

For this reason, avoid puppy parties organised by Vets, pet shops, or Creches. All meetings between your puppy and other dogs need to happen in the safety of your garden and to be carefully supervised by you, with plenty of time away from each other and with opportunities to rest. If your puppy keeps trying to play with the older dog, intervene and put her in her den/crate/pen with a frozen Kong so that she learns to calm herself down.

During this 8-week fear period, it is vital that she doesn’t have any interaction with dogs that make her feel intimidated. If another dog is too pushy with her, and she tries to hide from him, remove the other dog straight away. Never let your puppy feel overwhelmed by a dog who is trying to sniff her, paw at her, or loom over her. If your puppy has thrown herself onto the floor, with her head turned away and is showing the whites of her eyes, then she feels scared of the other dog. Do not let them work it out themselves, and don’t try to encourage her to play with the dog – this kind of interaction can result in puppies feeling very uncertain of other dogs and may create issues later in life.

If you do not know 10 dogs who are polite and well-mannered, then just 2 or 3 calm dogs are better than any excitable ones. It is much better that your puppy only meets a few calm, well-mannered dogs and is happy with them, than risking taking her into a park with off-lead dogs and having any unpleasant or over-excitable meetings.

100 Days with 100 Dogs: Day 38 - Resident Nelson

Day 38 of 100 Days with 100 Dogs is apparently International Buy a Book Day - I think these holidays are getting a little too blatant :-) However rather than link you to my author page I'll offer a link to a book that is essential reading for anyone looking to take in a rescue - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Adopting-rescue-dog-Without-Worry-ebook/

Resident Nelson

This cheeky chappie is Nelson. He his a very handsome 6 year old, black and gold GSD. Sadly he came to us because of some issues he had that his previous home that they weren't able to work with. Resource guarding and reacting to people and dogs being just some of his issues.

Since joining us he's made tremendous progress but unfortunately we do not feel he is suitable for rehoming. He will stay in our care where he is very happy and settled.

This dog is kept under our permanent care, please consider sponsoring our resident dogs to help pay for their life long upkeep. You can sponsor our residential dogs here: http://www.gsdwelfarefund.co.uk/product/sponsor-a-dog/

100 Days with 100 Dogs: Day 37 - Meet Storm

Day 37 of 100 Days with 100 Dogs welcomes a lovely young lady looking for her forever home - can you provide one for her?

Meet Storm

This beautiful girl is Storm. She is just 12 months old, and a black and tan entire short coated female. A disagreement with a resident dog has brought her into Welfare.

She is very loving towards humans, even strangers. Because of her history she will be looking for a pet free home. She has a high prey drive, but we think she would be fine with older children (above 10 years old).

She's currently located in Mildenhall, Suffolk

If you are able to offer Storm her forever home then please contact us via our adoption page - http://www.gsdwelfarefund.co.uk/adopting-a-german-shepherd/

Not already a GSD Welfare Member? Then we invite you to join and from as little as £10 per year you will receive our quarterly newsletter 'Dogsbody' - https://www.gsdwelfarefund.co.uk/product/gsd-welfare-fund-annual-membership/

Tia's Pupdates - Fake Snow, Real Games

Hello everypawdy. Tia here with a pupdate. Today I have to tell you all about a wonderful new game I've learned to play with the hooman. It was so much fun, and a surprise too, as I really wasn't expecting to be playing games. The hooman let me out to play while she cleaned my kennel. I don't usually pay too much attention to this as I usually take myself off in the field to explore.

However, today curiosity lured me back to check what she was doing.  She was having so much fun all by herself throwing snow around. It wasn't like the normal icy snow, but still looked a lot of fun so I joined in.  I helped her to pull it out of the bag and rolled around in it.

The hooman being a spoilsport tried to end the game, and asked me to go out of the kennel. I really don't think it's fair she gets all the fun so I stayed. I shall be watching in future and every time I see her with the bag of snow I won't leave the kennel.  Anyway - I must go as my Rodney is calling.

Love Tia ❤❤❤

To keep me in the delicious treats I so richly deserve, please consider donating generously to the German Shepherd Dog Welfare Fund. They not only rescued me (although ambushed is probably more accurate), they also continue to take good care of me and far too many other dogs!

https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=3TFBXREQPUVUG

[Editor's Note] I've just narrowly escaped being bitten on the bottom as Tia was vexed that no-one had sent her any problems to solve. I tried to explain that maybe, biting on the bottom isn't a solution to all of life's problems. So she bit on the bottom and ran away.

100 Days with 100 Dogs: Day 36 - Millie in Rehabilitation

Day 36 of our 100 Days with 100 Dogs series and we meet one of the many dogs that come to us, but need rehabilitation work before they can be considered for rehoming. Let's meet Millie...

Millie in Rehabilitation

Millie is a short coated sable female who is just 1 years old.  She was taken to the vets by her previous owner as they didn’t want her any longer.  We've had her with us for 14 weeks now, and we are still ironing out a few issues with her.

She is currently in foster and living with another dog, although she can still be a bit over the top in her play.  Millie is making wonderful progress, but is not ready for homing quite yet.  We will not be able to give a proper idea of the home we are looking for, for Millie, until she has had more rehabilitation.

We will post again when Millie is ready for rehoming, after then we'll look at adoption queries for her.

Today is International Day of Charity and we hope you are able to support us generously today - you can look on our store - http://www.gsdwelfarefund.co.uk/shop/ , donate directly, or support a new fundraiser raising money to help pay for Brodie's surgery here - https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/kiansendurancechallenge

100 Days with 100 Dogs: Day 35 - Meet Rocky

Day 35 of the 100 Days with 100 Dogs falls on 'Have Another Dessert day', which apparently is US based, but I think it's fine to celebrate in the UK, so some Butterscotch Angel Delight (other puddings are available) which not only is one of my favourite treats, but Wellington does like it, so I get all of it to myself! Marvelous 𓀁 Today we meet a young lad looking for his forever home - can you help?

Meet Rocky

Rocky is a handsome 2 year old male German Shepherd. He's a bi-colour. When he first came to us he exhibited a few issues, but we determined that they stemmed from anxiety.

Since then he's come on in leaps and bounds, and is much happier than when we first met him. On first meetings he takes a while to warm to you, although once he knows you, he is a lovely boy. Rocky's ideal home would be as an only pet and no children.

Rocky is currently located at Mildenhall in Suffolk.

If you can offer Rocky a loving home, then please get in touch via our adoption query form here - https://www.gsdwelfarefund.co.uk/dogslist/

We are holding as Halloween Horror Auction in October (not long to go at all!) - if you have something suitable to donate for auction then please get in touch whith us here - https://gsdwelfare.blogspot.com/2022/09/calling-all-creators-of-horror.html

Calling All Creators of Horror!

As part of our fundraising to keep the German Shepherd Dog Welfare Fund rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming vulnerable German Shepherds we are hosting a Halloween Horror Auction throughout the month of October, and of course including All Hallows Eve.

We're asking for items that we can auction - we've received an amazing response so far with original art, signed books, novelties and signed prints. There's an eclectic range from the spookily lighthearted all the way to stomach wrenching terror.

To let us know if you're donating something for the auction, please complete the short form below, and thank you all for your amazing generosity!

100 Days with 100 Dogs: Day 34 - Marlow Under Assessment

It's Day 34 already and officially into Autumn - we'll be in Winter by the time we reach the 100 dogs. Although by the time we reach the official end point we'll no doubt be able to continue much further. Once a dog is relinquished into our care and any immediate health issues are addressed , our next priority is assessing the newcomer and determining what needs to be done to allow them to be ready for re-homing. Let's meet Marlow, who's entering that process...

Marlow Under Assessment

This handsome lad is Marlow. He is a black and tan short coated male German Shepherd. He will be 2 next month, but unfortunately he's blotted his copy book by nipping a child. It wasn't a bite but the police were involved and they seized him and he has spent time in "police custody".

Thankfully they didn't see his behaviour as anything to be too concerned over and allowed him to come to us. He is currently being assessed and a rehabilitation plan put in place for him. We will know more about his homing requirements after his assessment. So far however, he is proving to be  a sweet boy.

Today we've also announced a competition for photo submissions to be included in our 2023 calendar. There's some wonderful themes which are sure at inspire some amazing photos - find out more here -  https://gsdwelfare.blogspot.com/2022/09/2023-calendar-comp.html

2023 GSD Welfare Fund Calendar Competition

The festive period is all too rapidly approaching and so it's time to put together the calendar for next year. Following tradition, we want to feature your amazing photos of your beautiful and beloved German Shepherds.

This year, however, we’re trying something a little different. Each month will have a particular theme and the winning photos will be the ones that best match those themes. Here’s an opportunity to dig out an old favourite, or stage something for that perfect shot.

To make sure that we also get your best and favourite photos we're adding a Wildcard option that doesn't relate to the listed themes and we'll pick from these if either we don't receive a suitable photo for a given theme, or we decide that a wildcard entry is better inclusion than the submitted theme photos. If you've already submitted your photos then we'll contact you to invite you to submit another wildcard entry if you wish for no extra fee.

The wildcard submissions will also be included in selecting the cover image for the calendar.

The themes for each of the months are as follows:

January

Quite naturally the New Year is the theme here, and that could take a multitude of forms, such as the Near Year celebrations, or a resolution for the coming year.

February

In the middle of February we have Valentine's Day, and who loves you more than your dogs do? πŸ˜ƒ

March

March hopefully heralds the arrival of Spring, and also the entirety of nature preparing for a bit of action. This sends some animals a little crazy, and so the theme is ‘Mad as a March Hare’.

April

In April we celebrate Easter - how does your dog mark the occasion?

May

Through May, Spring assumes its golden mantle, preparing for Summer’s arrival. All around are the blooms of the Spring flowers - the theme for May.

June

Summer is here and we enjoy the warmer sun, and the theme of midsummer.

July

In July we appreciate the summer holidays, maybe as a memory from our youth, or anticipating a trip to somewhere special.

August

Throughout August we enjoy splendid days on the beach - often a firm favourite for our canine companions and days at the beach is our theme.

September

It’s Back to School in September, and that's our theme for the month.

October

As October fades we watch the lengthening shadows nervously as we prepare for Halloween - the theme for the month.

November

Within November we pause in solemn silence to honour the service dogs that constantly demonstrate their bravery in times of crisis and war.

December

Christmas and a festive theme draws 2023 to a close.

Entry to submit your photos is £3 - this covers a single photo submission for every month and a wildcard entry.. You don’t have to submit for all months, but any additional submissions for a month cost £1. All money raised from the competition and calendar sales will help fund the continuing upkeep and rehabilitation of the dogs in our care.

Submissions are via email to gsdwfonline@gmail.com, as well as the photos, please include the following information:

  • Your name and a delivery address
  • How you paid your entry fee (PayPal or Bank Transfer)
  • For each photo you should include:the month (or wildcard) it's for, name, age, and sex of the dog, and (OPTIONALY) a brief description or anecdote to accompany the photo
There should only be one email per entry (an entry covers a single photo for each month and your wildcard photo), and submission must be before the 1st October. The entries will be judged by Debbie Hill, Frances Ring, and Michael Brookes and the successful entries announced for the end of October. Photos should be in a landscape format and at the highest resolution your camera or phone supports. Non-optical zoom should be avoided, and ideally the image won’t have any post-processing effects (although we can be flexible on the last point as long as the effects are applied at the same resolution as the base image).

Those whose submissions are selected for the 2023 calendar will receive a calendar once they are available. The selected photos will also be featured in our cover photo sets for our various online channels (where it is practical to do so).

All entries with automatically be entered into a draw to win 1 of 3 customised GSD Welfare Fund logos - more details on these coming very soon!

Good luck everyone, and we’re eager to see what amazing imagery you’ll all contribute!

If you have any questions then please ask them in the comments below, or via the submission email address gsdwfonline@gmail.com.
